Liberty X under the spotlight

Budding young journalists, entertainers and sports stars are being put through their paces this summer at BSkyB’s Reach For The Sky Live, an initiative which gives young people the unique opportunity to get behind the scenes of the media industry. Fazed put some questions to celebrity ambassadors for the event, Liberty X, and this is the guidance they had to offer to about how to get ahead in the pop-world:

1/ What advice would you give someone wanting to become a successful pop r‘n’b musician?

Our advice would be; be inspired, be resilient to criticism, and always have the self belief that you can follow your dreams. Breaking into the industry is not about luck, it’s about working hard and making the most of every opportunity that comes your way.

There is certainly no such thing as instant success, people also have to remember that there are loads of different and exciting jobs in the music and entertainment world – its not just about performing. We work with some really talented make-up artists, cameramen, and people who do the lights, write the scripts, direct the videos – in fact it is just as much fun behind the camera as it is in front.

2/ Did you know what you wanted to be when you were growing up?

Some people know what they want to be – Michelle always knew she wanted to be a pop star, while Kelli wanted to be a journalist before becoming dancer.

It’s important to remember to keep your options open and try new things when you’re growing up. That is why events like Reach For the Sky Live are such a great opportunity for young people to experience things that ordinarily they would not be able to do.

3/ We hear how being a pop star isn’t always glamorous, do you really enjoy it? What would you change about the job?

Trust us, being a pop star isn’t all glamour! You have to work long hours, be away from home for weeks on end and miss out on a lot of the things that many other people our age do. It’s not just about being on stage, getting made up and going to parties - just like any job, being a pop star requires a lot of hard work and dedication.

However, saying that there are a lot of rewards. When you’re standing on stage and people are dancing and singing to the to music you are performing it is a fantastic feeling. The buzz is incredible! How could you not enjoy that?

4/ Are you all ambitious, what do you still strive for?

We are all ambitious – in this industry you have to be because as soon as you sit back and think that you have a right to be at the top then somebody else will take your place.

However as a band are overall goals and ambitions are simple – we always want to perform to the best of our ability and hope that the public like what we are doing.

5/ Who else do you admire in the music industry and why?

We obviously all have our own tastes, but as a group we really admire Boyz 2 Men. They have incredible vocal harmonies.

6/ Who gave you the best advice you ever had and what was it?

Kelli’s mum has always said: “Hold your head up high and walk with pride”, and it’s a motto that has worked well for us!
