Beckham - Golden balls and pink nails...
So
David Beckham's new craze (or attempt to relieve boredom?) is to paint his fingernails
pink. So what, you might ask? Perhaps the only surprise is that he didn't choose
the colour gold, inline with other supposed parts of his anatomy…Nowadays
celebrity scrutiny, of Beckham in particular, is more ferocious than ever so does
it say more about us as a nation?
The point is Becks has got to the stage where no matter what he does he'll either be criticised or copied, not surprisingly Boots are reporting that male 'interest' in nail varnish has increased considerably. Yet, ironically because of the mauling he received at the hands of the media after his sending off against Argentina in World Cup France 1998, he's now risen in public stature to form such a hardened, strong character that it's now water off a ducks back. As his range of previous hairstyles and fashion statements demonstrate, he's almost toying with a media that he knows will lap it up.
His club certainly won't mind a bit of colour in his fingertips. They're now flogging their new replica shirt for the forthcoming season so presumably United, not adverse to a bit of marketing manipulation, will now be selling a Becks special: 'free pink nail varnish with every Beckham shirt purchased?'. Joe Public don't seem to mind either, ultimately gives everyone something to talk about in the escapism culture of 'Hello' and 'OK' magazine that we (and Posh 'n' Becks seem to literally) live in.
My view is fair do's: after the World Cup 'Goldenball's' is now globally seen as the most recognised figure our country has got (apart from Tony Blair who wins by default simply due to the air miles he puts in) - giving England a fresh, vibrant, and cool image which, let's face it feminine fingernails or not, can only be a good thing.
Only problem
is I'm not sure how the Scots, Irish, Welsh will compete. It's hard to imagine
Keith Wood the Irish rugby captain, cauliflower ears and all, suddenly developing
a fetish for eye-make up…
