Star Wars tops effects list

The opening scene from 'Star Wars' has been voted the greatest special effect in cinema history.

The iconic scene - shot in 1979 - from the first film of the epic George Lucas series topped a poll to find film fans favourite effects-based movie moments.

In the scene, a rebel ship races into the outer-reaches of space, trying to escape laser blasts, before a giant Imperial Star Destroyer comes into view, virtually filling the entire screen.

The sequence beat-off stiff competition from a whole host of classic film effects, including the ending of 1933's 'King Kong', in which the giant ape kidnaps actress Fay Wray and fights with helicopters at the top of the Empire State Building, which came second.

Other entries in the top ten include the horrifying moment from the 1982 remake of 'The Thing', in which a severed human head grows spider's legs, the deadly shape-shifting robot from 'Terminator 2: Judgement Day', starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, and the bullet time effects from 'The Matrix', in which time appears to slow down.

The survey was conducted by film magazine SFX, and editor Dave Golder admits he was not surprised to see a scene from 'Star Wars' top the poll.

He said: "It was the Big Bang of modern special effects. Star Wars winning the best special effects sequence ever shows just how significant the film is to movie fans."
