Daredevil

Daredevil

Taken from one of Stan Lee and Marvel comic’s darker, less known comic books.

Ben Affleck plays the blind super hero (Matt Murdock) stalking in the night to avenge his fathers death and make sure that justice is met.

Our hero falls in love with Elektra Natchios (Jennifer Garner) who, coincidently, isn’t far off from super hero material herself. Engaging in two fight scenes with the devil himself, once as a normal civilian playing hard to get when Matt asks her for her name, and the second when she thinks the Devil killed her father. She also fights with with Bulls-eye (Colin Farrell) the moody, but handsome Irish villain employed by the King Pin, the leader of crime in the city, to assassinate Elektra’s father and Elektra herself.

This story is not exactly original, being a simple vengence tale, its not exactly deep.

I usually love marvel comics and their films because the heroes and their powers are more believable (humour me); spider man gets bitten by a radioactive spider, x-men mutated and the Hulk was genetically modified. However Daredevil takes the more unbelievable root. Yes it is said that when you lose one sense your others are heightened to compensate, but the fact that he can actually see through his hearing is a little too convenient, and in this film, it’s hammed up a little too much for my liking.

The disappoint I had with the storyline was some what softened with the casting. I must say that Affleck did go up in my estimations with his performance in this film, definitely one of his best.

The casting of Michael Clarke Duncan as The Kingpin was probably the best move the production company made with this film. And Farrell also shows yet another side to his acting ability.

Other than the pretty actors and their ability to pull off a line or two, the fights are quite exciting and the soundtrack is breathe taking, but I don’t think it salvages the film enough to make me see it again.

Not the best I’ve seen but entertaining to watch on a rainy day.
