More movie reviewsNorth Country Pictures bring you a 60’s period kitchen sink drama with a reasonable cast well known to Soap viewers. Jealous God is an adaptation of John Braine’s 1964 novel about a Catholic teacher Vince (Merrells) who lives with his mother (Warren). Vince falls in love with young Prostestant librarian Laura but the path to true romance is not going to be smooth especially with a lonely older Catholic woman Maureen (Welch) also carrying a torch for this fresh-faced young man.
Jealous God is a watchable drama with a cast that also includes cameos from the likes of Eric Potts, Robert Duncan, Chloe Newsome and Roy Walker. In fact wherever you look, there are recognizable faces. Brit director Steven Woodcock has also paid attention to the period detail, ensuring it fits the time period for Braine’s novel. Its nicely done as a film with good work from Marcia Warren and Denise Welch particularly and you can’t really fault it as a piece of pseudo-yesteryear kitchen sink drama and you’d probably find it engrossing enough if you go out of your way to watch it. The only drawback probably is that you’re unlikely to consider it to be all that memorable a little while afterwards.
