This is just what you want to kick off the summer, a does exactly what it says on the tin fun action adventure movie.

Dirk Pitt works for NUMA who have something to do with underwater salvage, but his pet project is the search for an American Civil War iron clad steam battleship which went missing towards the end of the war and apparently was ship wrecked off the coast of West Africa. So when a Confederate Dollar coin from the ship turns up in Mali, Dirk and his sidekick/best mate Al (the always genius Steve Zahn) head up the Niger River to see what they can find. Along the way they give two World Health Organisation scientists a lift to track down the source of an epidemic killing people coming out of Mali.

Of course this being Africa there is an Evil Warlord running Mali, who is a conspirator with a French businessman (Lambert Wilson, the Merovingian from Matrix Reload) in whatever it is causing locals to get ill.

It has to be said that Dirk and Al don’t exactly plan every move and often stumble through the situations they find themselves in, but given time they do come through as does the movie.

I don’t think this film is going to set the world on fire, it doesn’t ask very serious questions but as a piece of entertainment it hits the mark it was aiming for and I would certainly go along for another adventure with Dirk and Al.
