Seed of Chucky

The sick horror killer dolls are back to cash in on this, the fifth instalment of the schlock horror comedy movies in which plastic dolls come to life (spawned out of the 1980’s Child’s Play series). By now, there aren’t many areas that are unexplored, so self-parody proves popular, in a bid to show that even Chucky’s creators don’t take things too seriously anymore.

Here Chuck (Dourif) and the missus Tiffany (Tilly) are in Hollywood, and getting to wind up their son who isn’t quite as evil as they are. Our Tiff, wants to play the part of the Virgin Mary and finds the only way to get the part is to indulge in a little ‘casting couch’ activity with the director.

Its all in the best possible bad taste and is certainly one of those Friday night highlights for when you don’t want to think too much and can rely on schlock energy to carry you over the entertainment threshold. The easily offended however (or perhaps that should read ‘those who are easily bored’) should perhaps give this 5th outing a wide berth. The jury’s out as to whether Chuck will be back for a 6th time but I guess that depends on the numbers game, bums on seats in the cinema and DVD sales. You’ll notice from the running-time that this fifth instalment sensibly doesn’t outstay its welcome.
