More movie reviewsThe director and co-writer of Switchblade Romance, Alexandre Aja, announces proudly that with Switchblade Romance, there was one aim “to scare people !” Many critics have mutually agreed that ‘Saw’ and ‘Switchblade Romance’ are the two most bone-chilling horror-flicks on the circuit this autumn, so look no further if you want to be scared out of your wits.
You don’t need to know too much in terms of the plot. It’s about two girls Marie (Cecile De France) and Alex (Maiwenn) who are best of friends. One goes to stay with the other’s family at a farmhouse out in the country. Very soon into the film, things begin to go very wrong in a very believable way and from there, you’re following the action in what swiftly becomes a story of basic and ruthless survival.
There are a number of twists and turns, most of which work and will have you guessing as to what will happen next. A final one is dubiously handled and without saying anymore, its up to you whether you think it works or not.
Switchblade Romance is Aja’s second film (his first being “Furia”) and it follows fairly basic and well-known paths in the horror genre but it uses them to such a visceral effect, it gives you a genuine sense that harm is close by. It’s not for the faint-hearted and it packs a decent punch.
