So
what was I supposed to expect?! A sudden invitation to the UK Air Guitar Championships
last Sunday night!
But there we were, an equally bemused good friend and I faced with the longest queue ever, heaving of equal parts hairy pierced sweaty hard-rockers, glammed Shoreditch babes and the plain curious.
93 Feet East, Brick Lane, London - Alive with air guitar. The venue filled out almost immediately, there was a brief welcome before the DJ's launched straight in.
The UK Air Guitar Championships were launched back in 1995 at the Lift Club in Brighton. Many supporters seemed to be original followers; the crowd (except us) knew very well who was bad and who stood no chance. Booing always overpowered any applause and the supporters seemed to be yearning for something totally different.
Each contestant staked their claim to the champion title, some relying on pure adrenaline fuelled RAWK! Others decorating their set with props and elaborate dress. We witnessed the delights of a fishnet body-stockinged rocker babbling blood down his chin, a near naked (Y Fronted) puny guy in hard hat and 'Air to the Queen' scribbled on chest, and even three people under cow costume - still RAWKING!
What shocked me most was when the mousiest librarian-type girl next to me, leapt onto stage and dived into Marilyn Manson persona - cool!
The evening
progressed, 20 or so attempts and just as much booing. The hard stuff didn't
impress and the Robert Palmer-ites simply bored the crowd. I was just bemused.
Then, from behind the Slack Sabbath glitter curtain, emerged the largest penis on earth - Satan Whopper Cock, champion of 2001. He certainly satisfied, making Brick Lane earth shake, claiming #1 prize.
It was an enlightening evening and highly entertaining. Watch out for Whopper Cock next year - he is rumored to be joined by two naked self-pleasuring ladies…..rock on!!!
