Girls Aloud will need to have more going for them to stand out, but on the evidence of this debut album they look like they could make it really big.
Girls aloud were formed from the ‘Popstars - The rivals’ TV show in the UK. A load of girls competed against each other to be in an all-girl group and a load of guys competed to be in an all-dude group. Then the two groups competed with each other. The male group ‘One True Voice’ were a big load of crap, ‘Girls Aloud’ were formed and made it to the UK number 1 spot with their catchy single ‘Sound of the underground’.
Most of the winners of these manufactured music shows have suffered a backlash in the press and from the public after the TV event. This killed the band who won the 2nd series of PopStars, ‘Hear-say’. Knowing this the ‘Girls aloud’ management kept the band out of the spotlight after their initial release, forbidding them from going to every 2-bit celebrity premiere. There was quite a gap between their first and second single and as a result they have managed to forego the backlash. People haven’t become sick of the sight of them, hell I like looking at them :p
Girls Aloud have tried to create their own sound, something slightly different from the schmaltzy saccharine sweet pop of Atomic kitten and so many other post Spice girl female groups which have taken the R n’ B route. They have gone for an edgier more rocky sound, lots of back beat and guitar riffs mixed with disco beats. They are like The Bangles, or the Go Go’s, crossed with Kylie. The 1st two tracks on the album are really great pop songs, with REALLY catchy chorus’, ‘No Good Advice’ in particular is such a cool song, its in my head right now damnit!
The album has 15 tracks and I think it would have been better if it had been kept down to about 10, but having said that the standard of the songs is high and they are all pretty varied. It will be interesting to see how this album sells and how the girls fare during the course of the year.
Sure they are a totally manufactured product but they seem to have more soul and character then most, this album is cool for getting in a party mood, it has some decent songs so you may want to check it out.
