Gorillaz - 'Demon Days'

The second album from the animated primates of Damon Albarn (Blur). The first album was a collaboration with producer Dan the Automator (Handsome boy modelling school, Deltron 3030) which went onto sell about 5m albums worldwide, far more albums than all of the Blur back catalogue. A second album was inevitable and hell that’s a good thing – this is a great album. This time Automator has been replaced by Danger Mouse in the production role after Albarn was impressed by his Grey Album on which he melded together The Beatles and Jay-Z.
Demon Days isn’t as chilled and ‘dubby’ as its predecessor, it has a cool laid back sound all its own. Albarn and Danger Mouse have refined the Gorillaz sound, 'Feel good inc' is the sexy little tune featured in the latest Apple ipod advert on tv. The bass on 'O Green world' is great, turn it up HIGH!, There seems to be less rapping on this album, but a highlight is Roots Manuva on 'All Alone'. Elsewhere Shaun Ryder and De la soul both provide sonic cameos.
'Fire coming out of a monkey's head' features a monologue read by Dennis Hopper! It hasinteresting voodoo imagery, but its actually about September 11th. That track is followed by thegospel chorus sounding ‘don’t get lost in heaven’ which is a gentle high point.
This is a chilled, bassy album with some great and varied tunes that will stay in your head long after the fire has blasted from the monkeys head.
