Kasabian

The Bowery Ballroom, NYC November 18, 2004

Is this a gig or am I at a football match? Seriously, sometimes it was hard to tell as Kasabian, purveyors of the Baggy Revival, took the stage to what seemed like a thousand British accents suddenly popping out of the New York woodwork shouting (bewilderingly) "Címon England!"

But it was hard not to feel the Anglomania stir up in your chest sometimes. By the looks of singer Tom Meighan, it may well have been 1995 the way he turned every note into an anthem with his blatantly Liam Gallagher posture (complete with round specs and pill-induced teeth-grinding).

But the real star tonight was the less obvious (but much more effective for the subtlety) guitarist Serge Pizzorno whose own manner slyly inserted the question: what if hipsters were allowed to mate with football hooligans? The result, he elegantly showed us, turned out to be soaring yet dirty electronic guitar rock even the cool kids will dance to.
