"I want to be single"

Dear Nicole,

Lesson 1: Never say “I love you and I’ll never break up with you” if you don’t mean it! That being said, yes, you said it, but you’re human and allowed to change your mind. In fact, people change their minds all the time. I bet there are millions of people changing their mind about something they said as we speak! So just because you said you love him and will stay with him forever in no way means you are bound to your words.

There’s no shame in wanting to be single, girl! If anyone hears you on this, it’s me! Being single is so much fun: more time with your girlfriends, opportunities to meet lots of new people (and cute boys!), and no one to feel tied down to. So if you feel like you would rather be single – I say go for it! After all, you have the rest of your life to be in committed relationships!

Breaking up with someone is never easy, but it’s best if you liken it to ripping off a band-aid – the quicker you do it, the more painless it is. So gently tell him that while you care for him a great deal, you aren’t ready for a relationship right now. And if he is a good guy, although hurt and sad, he will understand and give you the space you need.
